Christine Swintak and Don Miller: Artist-Run Bunker @ Confederation Centre Art Gallery

Saturday, August 11

The Confederation Centre Art Gallery welcomes Christine Swintak and Don Miller as artists-in-residence from May 27 to June 16. The Ontario-based artists are known for witty and performative building projects. These include “Location, Location, Location,” in which an entire building was taken apart and reassembled differently in the Blackwood Gallery, Mississauga.

According to Art Gallery curator Pan Wendt, Swintak and Miller’s task at the Confederation Centre will be both artistic and pragmatic. The artists are being asked to literally clean up the gallery’s basement and reassemble it into a gallery installation that will shed light on the institution’s history. Entitled “Artist-Run Bunker,” this project the first in a series that will explore the ambitious public works of the Diefenbaker, Pearson and Trudeau eras.

Swintak and Miller will be busy in the gallery’s sub-basement and Schurman Family Studios and regularly available to the public while they work. The end result will be an installation in the gallery, but the artists have proposed three possible plans, and, as Christine Swintak says, “It could go in a number of directions. Usually we work things out based on what we find.”

Curated by Pan Wendt.
